What do I need to know about pandemic flu?

Where has the avian flu occurred?

Who can get it?

How is bird flu transmitted?

What precautions can I take?

Western Michigan University's Critical Incident Response Planning Committee reviewed the Colleges and Universities Pandemic Influenza Planning Checklist from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While the WMU emergency action guidelines emphasize an "all hazards" approach, the emergency teams are currently developing specific pandemic plans.

Being prepared makes sense. From each of us to the global community, having emergency plans can indeed make a world of difference when disaster strikes. At the left are commonly asked questions. Below are links for pandemic preparedness plans and avian flu information:

The U.S. Government and health organizations

This site will be continually updated as new information becomes available. Please check here for WMU campus community specifics. Thanks for your interest. Please e-mail pandemic preparedness questions and comments to cam.vossen@wmich.edu.

Currently, there are no reported cases of avian flu in the United States.
